A very long tradition of wine maker, since the Romans established here, in 55 bc.
Their road to Spain is still going through our land.
Since 1733, the estate has never been sold, and stayed in the same family.
Since 1985, my wife and myself are taking care of this estate, and its wines.
Languedoc is still one of the few promising wine areas worldwide..
For several reasons.
First, we have the traditions and the experience of wine-making for centuries.
Second, our soil has plenty of potentialities. At Mattes, our soil is a rich patchwork of several types, which can give a large variety of tastes.
Third, the climate, up to now, is optimum to give the best quality conditions. North Wind, called there CERS, is keeping a good degree of dryness. On the opposite, in summer, mediterranean sea is giving some freshness.
Fourth, since the sixties, many new grape types have been put and then, now, for our selection, and blends, we can use a large variety of grape types :
my wife, on the right, and myself, with some japanese visitor
for red wines : CHIRAZ, GRENACHE, MOURVEDRE, CABERNET, CARIGNAN
for white : CHARDONNAY, SAUVIGNON, VIOGNIER, VERMENTINO
The last secret is that we have small yields, and want to produce great wines, even if we have to wait for 20 more years.
In total, our estate can produce 300,000 bottles per year, on around 80 hectares of grape fields. Total surface, all preserved, is 615 ha.
